FA approves WSL academy teams entering women's third tier from 2027-28
The FA has approved four WSL academy sides entering tier three of the women's pyramid from 2027-28, despite opposition from existing Women's National League clubs fearing competition with well-resourced academy budgets. Two sides will join each regional division, ineligible for promotion. FA data showed young English players get significantly fewer competitive minutes than European counterparts. Third-tier clubs will receive central funding for the first time.
