Thousands Pull a 400-Ton Castle Keep Home by Hand in Japan
About 4,000 lottery-chosen participants are hauling Hirosaki Castle's 400-ton keep back to its 1611 stone foundation in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, using ropes on rails — a traditional relocation method called hikiya. The keep was moved 256 feet in 2015 for wall repairs. On day one, 1,000 people moved it roughly 43 inches. The event runs through August 28.
