Durham's empty regimental museum reopens as £17m contemporary art centre

Durham County Council closed the Durham Light Infantry Museum in 2016, calling it too expensive to maintain. The building sat empty for a decade. On 22 August it reopened as The Light, a £17 million contemporary art centre, with works by Tracey Emin, Steve McQueen, Olafur Eliasson and Dan Flavin. Entry is free; temporary exhibitions are ticketed.
