King Harald, 89, remains in Oslo hospital; Crown Prince Haakon again serves as Regent

The Norwegian Royal Court confirmed on 21 August 2026 that King Harald, 89, remains at Rikshospitalet in Oslo. He was admitted after doctors noted side effects, including fluid retention, from cortisone treating his haemolytic anaemia — a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body replaces them. Crown Prince Haakon has again assumed constitutional duties as Regent. The Court says a further health update will come within a week.
