Treasury Doubles Long-Bond Buybacks; 30-Year Yield Holds Near 5.25%
The Treasury said August 20, 2026 it will double long-dated bond buybacks to at least $4 billion per operation starting September 9. 30-year yields fell roughly 10 basis points — a basis point is one-hundredth of a percent — then rose 5.4 points to 5.247% as selling resumed. Higher long-end yields push up mortgage and corporate borrowing costs.
