U.S. Sanctions ICC President in Unprecedented Move

On August 18, 2026, the U.S. froze the American-held assets of ICC President Tomoko Akane and a senior trial lawyer under Executive Order 14203. Akane is the first sitting Court president personally targeted. The ICC called it a "flagrant attack." Akane had warned in December 2025 that sanctions could threaten the Court's survival.
