Russian strikes destroyed 30 per cent of Ukraine's annual book output in summer 2026
Russian strikes on Ukrainian warehouses and book markets in summer 2026 destroyed roughly 30 per cent of the country's annual book production — at least 9.65 million copies, including 8 million in a 1 August attack on the RNK-Ranok publishing group in Kharkiv. Preliminary losses reach almost 1 billion hryvnias (£16.5 million). Ukrainian Book Institute director Oleksandra Koval warned of "the collapse of the entire book ecosystem."
