Alation Breach Highlights Metadata Risk for Catalog Vendors

Alation confirmed an August 20, 2026 cyberattack, two days after an availability disruption hit some customers. The company, serving about half of the Fortune 1000, has not disclosed data exfiltration. Because data catalogs store metadata, access policies, and lineage maps, an attacker could gain a roadmap to customers' primary data stores — a risk specific to this vendor category.
