Textbook authors sue OpenAI and Microsoft over unauthorized copying to train AI

On 14 August, lead plaintiff Michael Sullivan filed a class action in New York against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging they copied thousands of textbooks without permission to train their large language models. The complaint claims textbooks were downloaded from pirate sites and copyright notices stripped. The authors seek damages and an injunction. The same group sued Meta in July.
