Treasury Doubles Long-Bond Buybacks to $4 Billion; 30-Year Yield Drops, Gold Tops $4,500

On August 19, 2026, the Treasury doubled buybacks of its longest-dated bonds to $4 billion. The 30-year yield fell nearly 10 basis points (each = 0.01 percentage point) to 5.188%, then bounced to 5.208%. The dollar fell and gold rose 4% above $4,500. Secretary Bessent wants the 10-year yield below 4%; it was 4.75% on August 11.
