Three cycling deaths in three years expose a sport-wide safety problem

Finlay Tarling, 19, died after a car entered the Volta a Portugal route on 14 August 2026. Muriel Furrer, 18, died at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships; Gino Mäder at the 2023 Tour de Suisse. Team manager Jonathan Vaughters said some organisers are "abandoning the safety principles" as costs rise, and that rolling roadblocks at smaller races "don't work that well."
