Deus Ex designer Warren Spector announces retirement after 44 years in games

Warren Spector announced his retirement from game development on 18 August 2026 in a LinkedIn statement, writing he is "pretty sure" this marks the end of his career. Credited as the founding father of the immersive sim genre, his credits include Deus Ex, System Shock, Ultima Underworld and Epic Mickey. He cited being a month from his 44th year as a developer.
