Liechtenstein ends male-only royal succession, the last holdout among European monarchies

The Princely House of Liechtenstein voted in August 2026 to switch from male-only succession to absolute primogeniture, meaning the oldest child inherits the throne regardless of gender. Two-thirds of family members approved the change, which applies only to future births. Liechtenstein, the last European country to grant women the vote in 1984, now joins the Netherlands, Denmark, Luxembourg, and the UK in the reform.
