African Union Seeks Ceasefire in Sudan as War Nears Fourth Year

The African Union's Peace and Security Council began a two-day field mission to Sudan on August 16, 2026, pressing the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces toward a ceasefire, broader humanitarian access, and inclusive political talks. The war, begun in April 2023, killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. Earlier ceasefire commitments in Jeddah collapsed under mutual distrust.
