Sicilian Museum Heist Hits Day After Italy Recovered Stolen Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse

Thieves bypassed alarms at Messina's MuMe museum on 15 August 2026 and stole four Renaissance panels by Antonello da Messina, three from his signed 1473 altarpiece. Two were abandoned outside. The heist came one day after police recovered stolen Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse paintings near Parma, sharpening scrutiny of Italy's cultural-security infrastructure.
