Abstract painter Mary Heilmann dies at 86

Mary Heilmann, the abstract painter whose saturated, hand-built canvases drew on surf culture, music and the California landscape, died on 14 August 2026 in Riverhead, New York. She was 86. Born Mary Anne Heilmann on 3 January 1940 in San Francisco, she was represented by 303 Gallery in New York. Her death was confirmed by the New York Times.
