Danube Drought Cuts Nuclear Output Across Two Countries

Record-low Danube flows forced Romania to shut down one reactor at its only nuclear plant — which supplies about a fifth of national electricity — on 13 August 2026, with no restart expected for at least 10 days. Hungary's Paks plant, also Danube-cooled, was running at 25% of normal output, up from 10% earlier in August. Both depend on the river for cooling water.
