Romanian artist Teodora Axente paints Siena's Palio banner for 16 August race

Romanian artist Teodora Axente unveiled the drappellone, the hand-painted silk prize for Siena's Palio dell'Assunta on 16 August. The Comune di Siena appoints an artist annually; prior designers include Jim Dine (2000) and Fernando Botero (2002). Axente's banner depicts the Virgin Mary, the Golden Rose of Pope Pius II and the Siena skyline. It enters the winning contrada's museum.
