Xbox CTO Identifies Root Cause of July's 20-Hour Outage: Failed Licensing Service Update
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet revealed on August 10, 2026 that a roughly 20-hour July outage stemmed from a failed update to an underlying licensing service governing console sharing, Game Pass content, and PC gaming. A separate client-side bug caused additional licence checks to fail, creating cascading failure. A mandatory firmware fix began rolling out August 10 and becomes mandatory August 17.
