Roman shipwreck with 500 wine amphorae found intact off Sicily

Italy's Ministry of Culture announced on 8 August 2026 a Roman shipwreck found three miles off Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, at 46 metres. Divers Giacomo De Mola and Igor Bisulli located the 21-metre vessel, dated to the second–first centuries BC, carrying roughly 500 Dressel 1A amphorae — two-handled ceramic jars used to ship wine. Culture minister Alessandro Giuli called it "one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years."
