
America's Forgotten Oil Wells Could Generate Geothermal Energy
The U.S. has millions of abandoned oil and gas wells. The Department of Energy now funds converting over 500,000 of them into geothermal assets—using existing boreholes to capture heat and generate electricity or heating. A pilot project in Oklahoma recently produced power from a repurposed well, establishing the first state permit for this conversion and showing the pathway to scale nationwide.
