Affordable TVs Now Get Premium Picture Technology as Production Costs Drop
Hisense's new U7SG TV now includes mini-LED technology—a feature that used to be found only in expensive, high-end televisions. Mini-LED is a backlighting system (the light source behind the screen) that can be controlled in small sections rather than all at once. This lets the TV show deeper blacks and better contrast, similar to how a dimmer light switch gives you more control than a simple on-off switch. As manufacturers produce more of these TVs, the cost of making mini-LED has dropped significantly, bringing it into mid-priced TVs. This same pattern has happened before with other features like 4K resolution (ultra-sharp picture), HDR (brighter, more colorful images), and faster refresh rates—all started in expensive TVs, then became common in affordable ones. Consumers now expect better picture quality because of high-quality phone displays and streaming shows with advanced picture technology, pushing TV makers to add these features across all price ranges.
