Nicaragua's Government to Vote on Blocking Opposition from Elections

Nicaragua's legislature will vote in early August 2026 on banning opposition parties from future elections. President Ortega declared on the anniversary of his 1979 revolution: "No more elections for them." A top lawmaker promised to leave opponents "not even a crack." The UN and US criticized the plan but cannot directly force changes to Nicaragua's laws.
