Nicaragua's National Assembly to Vote in August on Barring Opposition Parties from Elections

Nicaragua's National Assembly will vote in the first week of August 2026 on barring opposition parties from future elections. President Daniel Ortega declared on the 1979 Sandinista revolution anniversary: "There will be no more elections for them." Assembly head Gustavo Porras said the legislature aims "to not leave even a crack" for the opposition. The UN and US condemned the move, which carries no direct leverage over Nicaragua's legislative process.
