Gas Explosion at India Dam Project Kills at Least 20 Workers

A methane gas blast collapsed a tunnel at a dam project in Sikkim, India, killing at least 20 workers. Methane is a flammable gas that can build up underground. The state-owned company running the site, NHPC, said trapped methane caused the explosion. Thirteen bodies were recovered; seven to eight remain unreachable due to flooding and toxic gas. No survivors are expected. NHPC has launched an investigation.
