Defense chief says Iran war has cost $37.5 billion, far below what the military asked for

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told senators on July 21, 2026, that the Iran war has cost $37.5 billion so far. The military had asked Congress for more than $200 billion, a U.S. official told Reuters in March 2026. Gen. Dan Caine appeared with Hegseth at the hearing.
