Government wants to limit council rate rises to 4 percent

Finance Minister Nicola Willis wants to cap yearly rises in council rates — the property tax that funds local services — at 4 percent. She called recent increases excessive. Official figures show prices rising 4.1 percent but council rates up 9 percent. Labour's Carmel Sepuloni said Willis was blaming councils unfairly.
