Chinese Coast Guard Strikes Philippine Sailor in South China Sea Dispute

In July 2026, a Chinese Coast Guard boat rammed a Philippine Navy rubber boat at a disputed reef called Second Thomas Shoal, AFP reports. Chinese crew then hit a Philippine sailor in the head with a baton. The shift from water cannons to hands-on force raises hard questions about whether allies might be drawn in to fight.
