Court approves $1.5 billion settlement between AI company Anthropic and authors

A US judge gave final approval on July 20, 2026 to Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement with authors who sued over use of their books to train its AI. The largest copyright settlement in US history covers over 480,000 works at roughly $3,000 each and requires Anthropic to destroy pirated copies of those books.
