Hamas Picks a New Leader After Two Years

Hamas named Khalil al-Hayya its new leader on July 20, 2026. The top job had been empty since Israel killed the previous leader, Yahya Sinwar, in October 2024. Al-Hayya had been the deputy and led talks on hostages and truces. He beat former leader Khaled Meshaal in a run-off vote, showing disagreement inside the group over its future path.
