Scorpion Venom and Hot Peppers May Lead to New Antibiotics

Mexican researchers at UNAM have found compounds in scorpion venom and habanero peppers that kill bacteria resistant to current antibiotics. Working with Stanford, they tested these compounds against tuberculosis and MRSA—a dangerous infection resistant to most drugs. Human trials are still years away, but the work adds to a growing list of nature-derived medicines for infections doctors struggle to treat.
