The FDA approved Edwards' Autus Size-Adjustable Valve on Oct. 1, the first heart valve that can be enlarged after placement. Surgeons place the small valve, which controls blood flow to the lungs, at 13 millimeters in young children, then stretch it to 22 millimeters with a balloon tube as the child grows, so it keeps working.
