U.S. Lowers Mileage Requirement for 2031 New Cars

New cars in 2031 will need to average 34.9 miles per gallon of gas, down from the earlier 50.4 requirement, under a final Transportation Department rule. The department called it one of the second Trump administration's biggest rollbacks of regulations, saying it fixes the mileage program while weighing car prices against saving fuel.
