Mahmood rethinks 10-year wait for permanent stay

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she had heard worries new residency rules were unfair. She told Labour conference the Government would be fair to both legal migrants and British citizens. The idea, like a longer probation, would double the wait for permanent stay from five to 10 years. Home Office sources said no final decision had been taken.
