Meta Under Investigation for Letting Children Under 13 Join Facebook and Instagram

The European Commission is investigating Meta for failing to enforce its own age rules. Despite saying users must be 13 or older, both Facebook and Instagram allow younger children to sign up. The investigation, begun in May 2024, also found Meta cannot reliably identify and remove underage users after they join. This raises serious questions about whether such age limits actually work.
