South Sudan closes shared government ahead of first vote

South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, shut down the shared government on Sept. 22, ending a 2018 peace deal that divided jobs between former rivals. Top deputies, ministers and lawmakers are out, but judges and soldiers stay. A short-term team will keep things running until the country’s first-ever national vote on Dec. 22.
