Federal funding for protecting orcas runs out as new law looms

Ottawa's $151.9-million program to protect endangered whales ends in March 2026. A bill introduced this fall would let cabinet fast-track building projects and bypass the law protecting over 600 at-risk species. Advocates warn the 74 Southern Resident Orcas left could face more ship traffic in their waters along the B.C. coast.
