Boat of migrants rescued after nearly a month lost at sea; disagreement over how many died

A boat of West African migrants, lost at sea for 27 days after leaving The Gambia, was rescued near the Canary Islands on 2 September 2026. Spain's coast guard confirmed five dead and 44 survivors. A charity called Caminando Fronteras said 83 of 127 people aboard died — a number officials could not confirm.
