Federal government puts $4.7-billion toward building Via Rail train cars in Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced September 3 a $4.7-billion federal commitment to build and maintain more than 300 Via Rail passenger cars at facilities in Quebec and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The cars will serve long-distance and remote routes. The decision reverses a 2018 contract that had Siemens, a manufacturing company, assemble Via Rail trains in Sacramento, California.
