Judge Says Catalina Island Can Start Removing Non-Native Deer

A judge tentatively cleared the Catalina Island Conservancy on September 1, 2026, to remove about 2,000 deer brought to the island a century ago for hunting. The deer eat native plants, letting weeds grow that increase fire danger. Specialists will shoot about 200 this fall. A final court ruling is expected within 90 days.
