Weather Agency Warns: El Niño Will Be Among the Strongest on Record

On September 3, 2026, the World Meteorological Organization warned that El Niño — a natural warming of Pacific Ocean waters that shifts weather worldwide — will reach its highest strength level and last into early 2027. The agency says it is near-certain to continue through February, peaking late 2026. WMO chief Celeste Saulo called it "off the charts" compared to 40 years of tracking. Nearly all land areas should see above-normal temperatures through November.
