Turkish Navy Frees Hijacked Ship Off Somalia — But Not Everyone Agrees on How

Somalia's government says Turkish warships freed the cargo ship MV Lutuf on August 29 after chasing pirates for ten days, killing 14, under a 2024 military partnership. Puntland, a region in Somalia, disputes this — it says the ship was freed after a ransom was paid. Neither claim is confirmed. At least 15 pirate attacks have hit Somalia's coast in 2026.
