Algeria Wants to Punish Forest-Fire Arson with the Death Penalty

President Tebboune ordered laws by 15 September making deliberately setting forest fires punishable by death, up from life in prison. Algeria has not executed anyone since 1993, though the death penalty remains legal for some crimes. The order follows fires that killed at least 12 people across northern Algeria during a severe heatwave.
