Cleverly Runs for London Mayor — but Needs Rival Voters' Backup

James Cleverly left the Conservative shadow cabinet on 29 August 2026 to run for London mayor. The 2028 vote lets people pick a first and second choice. If nobody gets over half of first choices, second choices are counted instead. LSE's Professor Tony Travers says Cleverly must appeal to Liberal Democrat voters to avoid failing like 2024 candidate Susan Hall.
