Kurdish Fighters in Syria Join the National Army

On August 25, 2026, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said they are disbanding from Damascus. Their fighters will join Syria's national army, and their local police force will join the interior ministry. This ends ten years of self-rule in northeastern Syria — the biggest armed group outside the government's control. Experts warn that truly uniting these forces will take much longer.
