Australia Reports First Case of Bird Flu Spreading to a Mammal

Australia confirmed its first case of H5N1 bird flu jumping from a bird into a mammal at Beachport, South Australia, on August 23, 2026. The virus, found in wild seabirds in June, has since reached 236 confirmed cases. This kind of species leap has happened worldwide during the current H5N1 outbreak among animals across multiple continents.
