Victoria's Leader Says Big New Train Tunnel Will Go Ahead

On 24 August 2026, Victorian Premier Ben Carroll confirmed the government will build SRL East, a 26 km underground train line connecting Cheltenham and Box Hill. In July, he had refused to rule out spending the money elsewhere, sparking doubt. He now promises cost cuts of about 6%, lowering the price from a maximum $34.5 billion to roughly $32.3 billion.
