Syria sends its former top religious leader to prison for life

A court in Syria sentenced Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, the country's former top religious leader, to life in prison on August 24, 2026. He was convicted of encouraging violence, defending murders, and misusing his powerful role during Syria's civil war. Police arrested him in March 2025 after he came out of hiding.
