US Sends 20 Deportees to Liberia in Major New Deal

On August 20, 2026, the US sent 20 deportees — people ordered removed from the country — to Liberia. Under the deal, Liberia agreed to take up to 1,200 over 12 months, one of Africa's biggest such agreements. Venezuelans and Cubans were among those sent, avoiding return to governments the US opposes. Five refused to get off the plane.
