US Sends Haitians Home to a Faraway City With Not Enough Money to Get Home

On August 20, 2026, the US sent over 160 Haitians back to Cap-Haïtien, skipping Port-au-Prince, where armed gangs control about 70% of the capital and US flights are banned through early September. Each person got US$76.40 — less than a bus ride to Port-au-Prince, 130 miles away. The US government warns: do not travel to Haiti for any reason.
